When Your Headaches Start in Your Jaw or Neck
You’ve tried the dark room, the medications, maybe the elimination diets. But if your headaches keep coming back — especially if they build through the day, are in your temples or behind your eyes, or arrive with jaw tightness, ear pressure, or a stiff neck — the source may not be in your head at all.
The connection most headache sufferers never hear about
The nerves that carry sensation from your jaw joint (the TMJ), your upper neck, and your face all converge in the same relay station in your brainstem and upper cervical spine. Because of that convergence, an irritated jaw muscle or a restricted upper-neck joint or muscles can produce pain your brain interprets as a headache — including pain that behaves like a tension headache or contributes to migraine patterns. This is why clenching through a stressful week, a long dental appointment, or hours of forward-head posture at a screen can end in a pounding headache, and why treating only the head misses the driver.
Common signs your headaches have a jaw or neck component:
- pain that starts at the base of the skull or temples
- jaw clicking, tightness, or morning soreness
- headaches after chewing, clenching, or long screen sessions
- tenderness when you press the muscles of your jaw or upper neck
- a history of “nothing shows up on imaging.”
How we treat it
At Cranial Pain Solutions, every patient starts with a comprehensive evaluation of the jaw, cervical spine, posture, and breathing mechanics — the whole system, not just the sore area. Treatment is one-on-one, hands-on, and tailored: advanced TMJ and cervical manual therapy, myofascial release, integrative dry needling where appropriate, and a home program that teaches you to interrupt the clench-tension-headache cycle yourself. Dr. Debbie Clarke is one of only a handful of physical therapists nationwide holding both CFC and CCTT credentials, which is the clinic’s entire specialty. Our therapists receive advanced, direct training under Dr. Clarke and are actively pursuing specialty certification, ensuring every patient receives the highest level of care.
We treat all headache types with a musculoskeletal component, including tension-type, cervicogenic (neck-driven), TMJ-related, and as part of a team approach to migraine alongside your physician.
